At WMH there is a chance to join a wide variety of singing groups. We have a particular focus on A Cappella singing. Check out our video page to see examples of A Cappella groups, Junior Pitch Purple meets every other Saturday and is suitable for year 6 upwards. You can also see some of the videos we've made during lockdown in the video section of our website!
String groups started up in Spring 2021 and now meet once a fortnight. The members of the current group range from grade 2-6. Click "What's On" from the menu and check out our videos and photos. Violinists and Cellists will be given the chance to be mentored by music scholars at local senior schools and/or students at Conservatoires.
Jo is an experienced violin teacher. She draws her methods from some Suzuki principles. Students are prepared for exams if they wish to progress up the ladder. However, Jo believes that a solid foundation in technique, learning to play by ear, good ear for intonation alongside learning to read music are more important than exams!
At WMH, we have an open-minded approach to learning music. Some of our musicians learn primarily through playing chords, understanding the keyboard and playing by ear over and above reading music. Although we do encourage some basic reading skills alongside the more practical (more fun!) approach. See Luke Reeves' website for information on this method of learning, http://lukesmusiclessons.co.uk/
At WMH we teach theory, based from a practical perspective, learning harmony, keys and rhythm. Check out our sheet music page to see the sample theory paper for the new theory exam.
Chrisjingle is an A Cappella group who get together to sing Christmas songs in 4-part harmony, primarily for the purpose of raising money for charity, but secondly - to have fun getting together and singing Christmas songs!
At WMH there will be a chance to explore composition in various styles. Song-writing is a growing art-form and at WMH we believe that writing songs is easy! We have an eclectic approach, ranging from simple 4-bar chord sequences to advanced jazz harmonies. These can be written down without use of notation, or with the aid of software such as Logic, Garage Band and Sibelius.
If you are interested in piano lessons following along a fairly conventional approach, for instance entering for ABRSM and Trinity Exams, we can fix these up at WMH. We have a few teachers available.
If you are interested in learning acoustic, steel string or electric guitar, we can fix you up with a teacher. If you're not sure what style you would like to follow, please get in touch for a trial lesson.
